Too Fat For My Girlfriend

Dear Rentapal
My girlfriend says I'm too fat and wants me to lose weight or else she will leave me. We've been dating for about a year already, and we have a pretty good relationship, except for this. I thought that maybe we could get married one day but now I don't know. Is she being too superficial?
Dave

Dear Dave,
I'd suggest asking her to clarify something. Is she asking you to lose weight because she is concerned about your health or because of more superficial reasons? If she's asking because she's concerned about your health, then I'd suggest that you get a medical checkup and share your doctor's advice with your girlfriend. If your doctor wants you to lose weight, then maybe your girlfriend can help you to work on this. If your doctor says there's no problem, then maybe your girlfriend will forget about it.

if she wants you to lose weight for more superficial reasons, then you should decide whether those reasons are important to you, personally. There's nothing wrong with wanting your spouse to look their best, but if you both feel strongly opposed on this issue, then maybe it's not the right relationship for either of you.

Let's ask the Rentapal audience to help with this one - Readers, let us know what you think!

  1. Did you find out why, Dave? I hope you had a sensible conversation with her, with no misunderstandings whatsoever. Don't worry Dave, you'll find yourself a wife someday, I'm sure of it.

  2. If a woman issues ultimatums for anything that's not criminally or morally wrong, she doesn't really love you and you don't need her. If she won't stick with you through your worst, she won't stick with you at all. Walk away.

  3. I hope you've found why your girlfriend said those to you. To be honest, there's nothing wrong if she has superficial reasons. Each of us deserves to have the best from our partners. Maybe she just wanted you to lose weight so you could get healthier. If you want, you can establish a health and exercise regimen to slim down a bit. That’s actually a good thing because exercise presents a lot of benefits, including reduced chances of incurring heart disease and cancer.

    Regards,
    Marc

  4. For me, her reason for leaving you is too absurd. I mean, your love for each other shouldn’t be based on your weight. Haha! But seriously, that’s not a valid reason to leave someone. Unless, she just said it because she’s just concerned and she wants you to have a healthy lifestyle. ;) I just really hope that you guys worked it out.

  5. Well, in reality, some people get to experience this kind of situation. But, usually they just really want their other half to think about their health. No matter what the case is, your partner shouldn’t leave you for this reason. If she can’t accept you for who you are, just let her walk away. I’m sure you will find that someone who will truly accept you. :’)
